A political party dedicated to an ecopolitical platform. Such parties exist in over 90 countries worldwide, including the United States where Toolshed is based. The first political party to employ the term “green” was in Germany. Green Party platforms typically embrace an understanding of ecology that is much broader than what is traditionally meant by the word “green.” (See Toolshed glossary entry for “ecology“). Usually situated on the far left of the political spectrum, green party platforms link social justice, “environmentalism,” non-violence and economic policies often associated with social democracies. Green parties have achieved some electoral success in some countries. However, the dominance of a two-party system in the United States has limited the reach of its Green Party.
